I’ve heard of IPL but not Diode. What is the difference?

Great Question! IPL (intense pulsed light) technology is technically not a laser treatment. It uses a broad spectrum of light with many wavelengths meaning it leads to unfocused energy around the hair and skin area. As a result, there is a lot of wasted unfocused energy and less selective absorption in the follicle. This results in less effective destruction of the hair. Using broadband light also increases the potential for side effects such as burns or pigmentation, particularly if integrated cooling is not used. IPLs are typically only suitable for lighter skin types (1-3 on the Fitzpatrick scale) for the most part.

The treatment methods outlined above mean that, typically, IPL technology will require more regular and long-term treatments for hair reduction. Our Magnum diode laser targets the follicle in a more focused manor. This means it will work more effectively with less patient discomfort (because it has integrated cooling) while treating more skin and hair types than the IPL!

How Long Does it take for Laser Hair Removal to Work?

Hair grows in cycles, so the laser is targeting the dark pigment of the hair follicles currently active in the growth cycle. This may be about 80% of all follicles in the area. Those follicles will then shed the hair over the next few days or weeks. But wait! Additional follicles will then begin their growth cycle and those hairs will also need to be targeted in the next treatment session in 4-6 weeks.

Over time, with multiple treatments you will significantly reduce the number of hair producing follicles. Remember, laser hair removal is actually permanent hair reduction… so with multiple treatments you are permanently reducing the number of follicles producing hair. Each treatment will address the remaining follicles in their growth cycle for smooth and (nearly) hair free skin for the long term.
